Farming was a very popular job, as was trapping animals. Whaling was invented in colonial times to get raw materials to make oil for lamps. Artisans and craftsmen made farm tools and clothing. Ship building was something to do as well because of all of the trade between Europe and the colonies. It would only make sense that settlements would have barbers, bartenders, tailors, coopers (barrel makers), etc...
In summary, most people did something to help the community survive.
