The plebeians ate the same food as any other aristocratic Roman. At the beginning of the city their diet was more than likely heavily grain based but as they gained status and wealth, their foods grew as elaborate as the other people of wealth and status.
The diet of the Roman farmers or peasants depended upon their wealth to an extent. Many country folks are hearty meals, mostly grain based, but meat and eggs were also included. Do not confuse the country people with the city poor. Although the peasants may also have been poor, they ate better than the city poor, as they "grew their own" rather than having to depend upon a grain handout.

The price of food was so high that wheat subsidies had to be given from the government, in order for some of the common people to survive.
Unless they had animals that they could farm themselves, they could not afford meat.
Mostly grains; porridge like substances. Most other foods were expensive, (more than what we would be prepared to pay today), people spent most of their wages on food.

Bread, Meat, Vegetables etc. All of these things were not highly desirable or expensive, they were the plain types of foods therefore did not cost much. They could also buy their own wheat to make bread.

The ancient Romans consumed a fairly well rounded diet. The foods that they did not eat were foods such as tomatoes, yams, and potatoes. These were New World foods and the Romans never knew about them.
