In roman history, the poor/lower class (the lower class was called plebians, as a little vocab for you) ate stale, old bread, and relish. Relish for plebians isn't like the relish we have today. Their relish was pretty much left over slop, and food.

Fruits and vegetables, meats, sauces, pastas, pastries and breads, all were part of daily life from 1450 to 1600 in this period. There were important differences though in the preservation and preparation of foods, and how they were served, all of these were available in abundance, and as this was their staple diet, there was not shortage of them during this period.
