When Andrew Johnson was president, slavery almost came about again (in fact many historians consider Johnson the most racist president in history). Things really got bad when the Congress left for summer vacation. President Johnson started passing bogus plans that the Republicans of the Congress (who held majority at that time) didn"t approve of. The republicans decided to take advantage of Johnson by passing a law (sorry forget what it was called) that didn"t allow Johnson to fire anyone in his Cabinet without their authorization. He fired William Seward, the secretary of war, anyway, thus he got impeached.
The US has had two Presidents named Johnson, both of whom succeeded assassinated Presidents:
- Andrew Johnson (17th President) served out Abraham Lincoln's term 1865-1869 despite an impeachment, and the fact that he was a Southern Democrat opposing the Radical Republicans.
- Lyndon Johnson (36th President ) served out John F. Kennedy's term 1963-1965, won re-election in 1964, but ran afoul of the Vietnam War and did not run in 1968 (Richard Nixon beat Hubert Humphrey).
The major event that shook the nation, and shook President Johnson was the impeachment of President Johnson. Ironically, the first US president to be assassinated, Abraham Lincoln, was followed as president by his Vice President, Johnson. And for the first time, this became the first ever impeachment of a US president.
he violated the tenure of office act and was impeached for doing so
Andrew Johnson had been vice President under Lincoln, and he became President only because of the assassination of Lincoln. Even though this was exactly what the constitution required, many people at the time felt that Johnson did not have the right to become President, and resented him. This was particularly true because Johnson was from the South. It almost seemed like a final coup d'etat by the Confederacy, for Johnson to become President.
It was stopped by president Johnsonβs b*tchass
For most of the time while Johnson was in office the congress was not even "seated" in 1865. When the congress did get back in session Johnson had already handled many of the problems at that time.
