Who was saladin leader off what country or religion?

Saladin was a Muslim leader at the time of the 3rd Crusade. That was at the end of the 1100s. He fought against Philip of France & Richard I of England (Lionheart). I think he came from what is now Iraq.

Who were the leaders of the crusades?

Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany were the leaders of the unsuccessful Second Crusade. Following the Turkish conquest of the town of Edessa, separate French and German armies marched to Asia Minor in 1147, were defeated by the Turks, and failed to accomplish any major successes. They even endangered the survival of the Crusader states with an attack on Damascus.

Why do you think Richard and saladin signed a truce?

Richard-I and Saladin entered a failed negotiation for the return of the True Cross to the Crusaders in exchange for the lives of 3,000 Muslim prisoners. Saladin wanted to stall and not hand over a relic which would only embolden Richard and his troops in their attack on Jerusalem. They would later enter a secret negotiation (also failed) involving marrying off Richard's sister to Saladin's brother Alahdeel (sp?). Which failed due to the siblings problems with the faith of their prospective political betroved. The one successful negotiation involved ending the conflict after Saladin's failed counterattack at the port of Jaffe. With both armies exhausted, they would end the wars of the third crusade and Richard would keep the conquered cities of Acre and Jaffe while Saladin would keep everything else in his empire.

Who was Richard the Lionheart?

Richard the Lionheart was King Richard the First, ruler of Britain 1189-99 AD. You will also find references to Richard Coeur de Lion - this is the French wording for Lionhearted. He is the king referred to in the Robin Hood tales - his brother was King John - often portrayed as the evil brother, in the same stories. Although King of England, Richard could not speak English. He was instrumental in the 3rd crusade & fought against Saladin in Outremer. He spent about 9 months in England during his 10 year reign, for part of which he was held ransom in Austria when captured by the someone he had insulted, and the ransom was huge - 100,000 marks, i think. He was killed by a crossbow bolt laying siege to a castle in France.

When did armies start using the crossbow?

Well they were around when Richard I Lionheart was killed by one in 1199, but I don't think they were at Hastings in 1066, so that narrows it down to 130 years or so..... & then I look it up to find that the Chinese had them... wait for it, in the 5th century BC !!!

Achievements of Richard the Lionheart?

Yes and No.Yes, because he was an amazing warrior. Richard was seen to the whole of Christendom as a hero for going on the Third Crusade and attempting to recapture Jerusalem back from the Muslims. However, he didn't return entirely successful - only being able to make a treaty with the Muslim leader, Saladin, where Christians could visit the Jerusalem and keep the coastal towns of the Holy Land. Unfortunately, it only last a few years from the death of Saladin and Richard. But, he was still seen as a brilliant king, amazing strategic mind. No, because he was King of England, however he only spent six months of his ten year reign in England and sucked all the money dry. He even stated that 'I would sell London if i could find anybody rich enought to buy it.' So, he had a bit of a problem with money.V

Is the US continuing Richard the Lionharts third crusade?

The US wishes to protect Israel, protect itself and secure oil supplies. The third crusade sought to recapture Jerusalem and maintain it as a Christian state. Both enterprises were/are opposed by Muslim forces, but they did not/have not similar objectives. Saladin's ambitions were also opposed by significant Muslim forces, the Fatimids in Egypt and by his mentor Nur Din. Neither Saladin (a Kurd) nor Nur Din (a Turkoman) were Arabs. Saladin certainly respected even admired Richard, there is no parallel situation today. In short, although there are similarities I think that we should be careful in drawing parallels between the present situation and that at the time of the crusades.

When did king Richard the Lionheart born?

He was born in 1157 was the 3rd son of Henry II and was born at Oxford. As a child he was invested with the duchy of Aquitaine, his mother's patrimony. He did not spend, in his entire life, a full year in England; some scholars don't think he spoke English.
