The world in our normal experience appears to be very solid. Continents do not appear to be moving. If you do not understand that continental plates float on the magma beneath, it would seem to be ridiculous that anything as large and heavy and solid as a continent could move at all.

The hypothesis that continents 'drift' was first put forward by Abraham Ortelius in 1596.

It was originally because of religious views. They believed that when God created the Earth he created it perfect so the idea of it changing by itself was against their beliefs.

Also his ideas where not generally believed because he was an astronomer and meteorologist. Scientists at the time believed the earth was shrivelled like an old apple.
