Rome.
Yes. Remember, Shakespeare is not a historian, he is/was a playwright. Even though he used genuine historical writings for his research, he still had to create dialog an even some events in order to produce a good play.
Cleopatra contributed to the downfall of Marc Antony by luring him to Alexandria and indulging him in his weaknesses. She did this for political purposes, but as she was not a very brilliant politician (contrary to the current notion) her schemes backfired and both Marc Antony and herself ended up the losers.Cleopatra contributed to the downfall of Marc Antony by luring him to Alexandria and indulging him in his weaknesses. Marc Antony and Cleopatra were political allies. Cleopatra seduced the vulnerable Antony in order to gain political favor. Romantics have built up their relationship into a love affair, but in reality it was hardly that. When the rift between Octavian and Antony deteriorated into war, Cleopatra was blamed and used as an excuse for the war. Cleopatra and Antony were defeated by Octavian and they both committed suicide.
Originally, Octavian simply came to Rome to collect his inheritance. Marc Antony, however, denied him not only his inheritance from Caesar but even denied him recognition. Octavian, put up with the insult, and several others until he had gained enough power and prestige to confront Antony.
Antony holds up the torn, bloodstained cloak, putting his hands through the holes made by the daggers that killed Caesar. Antony uses this to play upon the emotions of the crowd.
Hollywood and William Shakespeare would have you believe that they were tragic lovers but the reality of their relationship was mainly political. Cleopatra was desperate to keep her dynasty alive and her kingdom independent. Antony was desperate for money to fund his eastern campaigns and by military victories, regain his status in Rome which had been undermined by Octavian. The two formed an alliance in which Cleopatra was given territories and honors and Antony was given the funding for his armies. Cleopatra used every means at her disposal, including sex, to hold Antony to their agreement and prevent him from returning to Rome.
No his ex-wife did, but it only led to disaster. Marc Antony originally ruled Rome as Caesar's Master of the Horse while Caesar was in the East going after Pompey. He had a problem with unrest and came down hard on the rioters, incurring the anger of Caesar. When things were patched up between the two of them, and Antony was counsul with Caesar, Caesar was killed and Antony was the sole authority in Rome.

Cleopatra became famous or infamous because of the misconceptions about her. In her own time she was a minor queen of a crumbling dynasty. She gained notoriety as the seducer of Marc Antony in Octavian's propaganda against Antony. William Shakespeare took up the story and exaggerated it into a passionate love affair for one of his plays and her fame spread from there.
