165th Combat Engineers landed in St Germain 27JUL44 and served in Germany as Engineers for the 2nd Free French Infantry in the Liberation Of Strassburg 24-30NOV44, among so many other duties. Please look for website dedicated to this forgotten unit in the near future. My grandfather was a SSGT in this unit and I am still trying to transcibe all his notes, and the unit also has a book that was printed called "IS THIS IT" by Richard Ross Reibert. I also have a unit map and alot of pictures. The unit was born at Camp Dorn on 5May43, and was commanded by LTC Charles Schilling. For more information please email 165thcombatengww2@gmail.com

What was significant of the 100th battalion?

The 100th Battalion(Seperate) was organized with Japanese-Americans during early part of WW2. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, there was a backlash against all Japanese living in US. In repsonse, a battalion of Nisei volunteers (second generation Japanese-Americans) was organized from units of the Hawaiian National Guard and designated the 100th Battalion (Seperate). This unit was sent to Camp Shelby, MS for training in 1942. There were many skeptics that did not think the Nisei would be remain loyal to America. All the officers were haole (Hawaiian for white). The 100th Battalion(Seperate) was merged with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team as the 1st Battalion. What American army unit in Italy earned a larger number of citations for combat heroism than any comparable army unit?

442nd Regimental Combat Team which included the 100th Battalion. This unit consisted of Japanese-Americans from the west coast and Hawaii. They were one of the most decorated units in the US Army. They also had the unique distinction of fighting in Italy alongside the 36th Infantry Division, then transferring to Southern France with the 7th Corps and then were returned back to Italy, where they served until the end of the war. All other units that were pulled out of Italy for the invasion of Southern France did not return. While in Italy, the 442RCT was attached to the all-Black 92nd "Buffalo" Infantry Division, along with the 478th Regimental Combat Team, which consisted of men who had been trained as anti-aircraft gunners but where re-trained as infantryment. This made the 92nd Infantry Division an inter-racial US unit, having white soldiers, black soldiers and Asian soldiers.Organization:442nd COMBAT TEAM442nd Infantry Regiment..1st Battalion (100th Infantry Battalion) - Companies A, B, C, D..2nd Battalion - Companies E, F, G, H..3rd Battalion - Companies I, K, L, M.....-522 Field Artillery Battalion - 16 Mar 1945, reassigned to 7th Army......-232 Combat Engineering Company......-Anti- Tank Company......-Cannon Company......-Service Company......-206 Army Band...Supporting Units......-599th Field Artillery Battalion of 92nd DivisionLink to a short history: see related links (below)

What was unique about the 442nd combat regiment?

442nd Regimental Combat Team of World War 2 fame. This unit was organized from Japanese-Americans during a time when the US did not trust anyone who looked like a Japanese. Japan had just attacked the US and declared war. Americans joined the Army to go into war and fight the Japanese. Here was a group of Americans from Hawaii and west coast who joined to fight for their country---USA. A Regimental Combat Team was a unit that was not large enough to be called an "infantry division". It did have 3 battalions and support artillery and engineers. This unit was sent to fight with the US 5th Army in Italy. Then it was sent to Southern France and later returned to Italy where it was attached to the 92nd "Buffalo" Infantry Division(Colored). This unit excelled itself in battle. It is recognized as the most decorated unit of its size during World War 2. The organization was as follows: 442nd COMBAT TEAM442nd Infantry Regiment1st Battalion (100th Infantry Battalion) - Companies A, B, C, D2nd Battalion - Companies E, F, G, H3rd Battalion - Companies I, K, L, M522 Field Artillery Battalion - (16 Mar 1945, reassigned to 7th Army)232 Combat Engineering CompanyAnti- Tank CompanyCannon CompanyService Company206th Army BandSupporting Units599th Field Artillery Battalion of 92nd DivisionLink:http://www.custermen.com/ItalyWW2/Units/442RCT.htm

What battles in Europe did the XXI Corps Combat Engineers participate in?

XXI Corps combat engineers were actually pretty late to the fight, only joining into combat in mid-January of 1945. Corp operations jumped off against the remnants of the German offensive Operation Nordwind and then moved under control of French 1st Army. They participated and fought in the battle of the Colmar Pocket, resulting in the encirclement and surrender of German divisions besieged there. The combat engineers were employed against the Siegfried Line defensive network, through which the XXI Corps captured Saarbrucken and followed XV Corps to the Rhine river. The engineers forced the assault across the Rhine, after which the Corps captured Wurzburg and finally Schwienfurt after a massive five day battle against determined German defenses. The Corps fought and captured Augsburg and Bad Tolz before continuing down and into Austria before the war ended.

How do you find information on the 664th topographic engineers in World War 2?

My Dad passed in 1998 & was in the 61st engineer combat battalion in WW2. I have been unable to find any info on the internet. My Mom has a photo from Stars & Stripes which is a 1 page cartoon on the 61st engineer combat battalion. I recall the cartoon is of a football game & the caption is "They have the goal line mined" with reference to the 61st engineer combat battalion. I know my Dad lived with a Belgium couple for a short while during WW2 but have no further info. All the best, Wayne Masters The 61st Combat Engineer Battalion landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on or about D-Day + 6 , June 12, 1944. They maneuvered as far south as Epernay, France before heading north to Dolhane, Belgium and eventually into Germany. Your father lived with a family in Dolhane and most of the 61st battalion, including my father, were billeted with Belgian families in this town for about 8 weeks from November, 1944 through early January 1945. The 61st were on the northern fringe of the Battle of the Bulge. I am uncertain of their precise engagement in the battle but I do know that anyone capable of carrying a rifle was put on guard.
