The Pennsylvania system evolved a separate confinement. This idea was conceived for the hardened and atrocious offenders. This system was based on five principles: 1. Prisoners will not serve their sentences by the victims vengeance, but instead have a life changing experience though the difficulties of prison by suffering in a way that will enlighten them. 2. Solitary confinement would prevent criminal activity in prison walls. 3. In Isolation, prisoners would think about the reasons of why they are in jail and would lead them to be sorry for their wrong actions. 4. Solitary confinement in itself would be punishment because humans enjoy company. Therefore, solitary confinement is taking that joy away. 5. Solitary confinement is cost efficient because prisoners will not need a long time to repent and there will be few guards. The New York System evolved a rival concept called the congregation system. Prisoners were held in solitary confinement-like conditions at night, but during the day the prisoners were to work yet were not permitted to look at each other or socialize. The New York System also created the contract labor system. Private employers would provide machinery and raw materials and the prisons would provide the prisoners as laborers. Because the inmates made products to sell, the costs of the prison was covered by the contract labor system. The differences Pennsylvania had in mind was keeping the prisoners Isolated, wanted the prisoners to repent, and wanted the prisoners to think about the bad things they have done. New York`s different ideas were strict discipline and obedience. This was required since the prisoners were going to be in the same area. The way Pennsylvania`s system affected the inmate`s daily lives were to remain in their cells for eating, sleeping and working. Life as a prisoner in New York was different. They stayed in their cells at night but the inmates were together to eat and to work. The activities of the Pennsylvania prisoners were Bible reading and working on crafts in their cells. New York`s prisoners activity were to work together in shops.
