The Good Friday agreement is working because both sides in the conflict have realized that they must work together, for their own future and that of generations to come. There is no future from guns or bombs, only pain and suffering. However, there is much more to be done, or the flame of hope could yet fail. As I write, there is still Hate on the streets in Northern Ireland, Churches have been damaged, Orange lodges have been burnt to the ground, or wrecked. Those who will be marching on Monday next, (13th this year, because the 12th is on a Sunday) must respect the other side who fear these marches, and the Nationalists must respect the Unionist tradition. The Good Friday agreement was voted on by all the people of Ireland, the first time since the 1918 general election when the majority voted for independence. Both sides in Ireland ( the whole island) are drawing closer together, and working together. The UK government needs to support this, and all governments in the Celtic Isles, Britain and Ireland must work together for all the people of these islands. The Belfast agreement is not an end, it is just a beginning, and needs the Prayers and Support of all of us.
It appears to have ended (Most of) the conflict between Northern Ireland and The Republic Of Ireland. Certainly the bombings and murders and maimings are no longer on the news all the time.
Because it was the beginning of the peace between the Republicans/Nationalists and Loyalists/Unionists.
Yes. It is a significant document as part of the peace process which has led to a much more peaceful Northern Ireland and better relations between Britain and Ireland.
