The Greeks were such prolific breeders that not even their constant wars could contain a burgeoning population. As each city-state had very limited productive land, they could not divide small family farms up amongst several sons, so these became landless and therefore a problem. So the cities loaded the surplus on ships and sent them off to seize land from the inhabitants and establish new city-states for themselves. This way the Greek world grew to over 2,000 independent city-states spread around the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
