The Romans did not have a name for Bulgaria. The area which is now Bulgaria came under two different provinces of the Roman Empire: Thracia and Moesia. Thracia (Thrace in English) covered central and southeastern Bulgaria, northeastern Greece and the European part of Turkey. Moesia covered southern Serbia, the north of the modern Republic of Macedonia, northern Bulgaria, Romania south of the river Danube and southern Moldova.
