The US used only the M551 Sheridan and M48A3 Pattons tanks in Vietnam. Generally speaking, only four things happened to them during and after the war:
1. Some were so heavily damaged that they were "blown in place" with demolition charges, this was mostly a US Marine Corps procedure.
2. Some were buried by the US Army Engineers; after they had been stripped bare of all usable and classified parts, this was primarily a US Army practice.
3. Several hundred were transferred to the South Vietnamese military; excepting the M551 Sheridans. These ended up in the North Vietnamese services, once they over-ran the south.
4. The balance (the rest of them) were transferred back to the US via naval and contracted sea going vessels.
After arrival in the US, since they had been replaced with newer tanks like the M60 Combat Tank (aka Main Battle Tank), along with the M551 which was not replaced...they were mothballed, used for hard targets, and used for OPFOR (Opposing Force units for training). Slowly, they were taken from mothballing and re-cycled (scrapped).
The Australians did nearly the same thing with their Centurion medium tanks. The Centurion was the only allied tank in Vietnam that came from that particular allied nation. All other allied nations in the war used US equipment.
1. Air War over North Vietnam (MIGS vs US JETS) 2. Land/Ground War in South Vietnam (Patton tanks and ACAVs) 3. Riverine War in South Vietnam. (Swift Boats & Monitors)
The US DID change it's tactics in Vietnam. The war went FROM a guerrilla war TO a conventional war (tanks and B-52 bombers). Had President Kennedy lived, Vietnam very well could have been fought by the USN SEALS and USA Special Forces (Green Berets). Fighting fire with fire. When Kennedy died, the WWII Generals took over; and Vietnam went WWII style (jets fighting jets, tanks fighting tanks, etc.).
When Afghanistan jet fighters are fighting US jet fighters. When Afghanistan tanks are fighting US tanks. When Afghanistan warships are fighting US warships. When Afghanistan soldiers are fighting US soldiers. Then it will be like Vietnam. Right now, it just a law enforcement issue; finding terrorists, arresting them, or terminating them.
M48 Patton tanks entered US service after the Korean War and fought in the Vietnam War. The first of Patton series tanks, the M46 Patton, served in the Korean War. The M46 was simply a modified M26 Pershing tank. The M47 Patton never saw combat with the US military.
During the Vietnam War, a US Army tk bn was about 58 Patton tanks and almost 600 men.
During WWII, US tanks burned gasoline for fuel; during the Vietnam War US Patton and Sheridan tanks used diesel for fuel.
The Vietnam War ended on 30 April 1975, when North Vietnamese Tanks crashed through the South Vietnamese Capital's gates.
During the Vietnam War, the US Army's M48 Patton tanks were manufactured by the Chrysler Automobile company in Detroit MI.
Gosh, how the world has moved on! Just a couple of decades ago this question would have been very surprising. The USA was the chief non-Communist nation involved in the Vietnam war.

WWII thru Vietnam was 5 tanks per platoon. 3 tanks led by the LT was the heavy section, 2 tanks led by the platoon sergeant was the light section. After Vietnam, everything changed.

The US commenced bombing North Vietnam, and deployed tanks, artillery, and infantry divisions for combat in RVN (Republic of South Vietnam). Vietnam was a guerrilla war NO MORE.

Australia deployed a regiment of their Centurion tanks to Vietnam.

The Vietnam War was the second "hot" battle of the cold war. The Korean War was the first "hot" battle of the cold war. The US fought to prevent the communist nation of North Vietnam from conquering the free Republic of South Vietnam. The communists won this second round on 30 April 1975, when communist tanks crashed through the South Vietnamese Capital's front gates, and parked their tanks on the capital's front lawn. They had won, the war was over.
