They wanted to gain political, social, and economic strength. America's main motive was to gain spheres of influence, or colonies located near large empires. They also wanted resources other colonies had that they couldn't provide, so they would have the upper-hand when trading with foreign colonies. Finally, they wanted to follow the idea of Social Darwinism, which essentially meant survival of the fittest. The idea at the time was countries with more land and power would survive longer than those that didn't. America didn't want to appear weak, and therefor acquired land in the first place.
