The majority of men just did their two years in the Army, and if Vietnam was part of that service...then they did their best and got out (of the service). MOST considered the 2 years in the service as an interruption of their lives (an interruption of getting married, having kids, getting a job, buying a house, going to college, etc. etc. etc.).
However, 10 or more years after the fact; Many of them are glad for having had the experience. And looking back, they're happy they did it. As an added fact, MANY US draftees reinlisted and continued on doing a 20 year career with the military in MANY cases. Conversely, many RA volunteers got out when their time expired and did NOT reinlist. Point? Draftees realized the army wasn't that all bad afterall! And Volunteers realized that the army wasn't all that good (for them) afterall.
Good men ulitimately came from both sources...nature had it's way of making a good army back then.

WWI, WWII, and Vietnam were fought against the nations of Germany, Italy, Japan, and North Vietnam respectively. No "nation" is at war with the "nations" of Iraq or Afghanistan. Those are law enforcement acts of violence occurring in those nations. Traditionally, a war is fought between two flags (two governments). Criminals (terrorists) have no flag (no government).
The British fought in Korea, not Vietnam.
