It is a city and archaeological site located in the northern Yucatan Peninsula, present-day Mexico.

It used to be an important political and religious center for the Maya Civilization, between 900 and 1200 AD. By 1250 AD it had been abandoned and only the nearby water well (a big sinkhole known as the Cenote Sagrado) had became a pilgrimage site.
