He told Zachariah that he and Elizabeth's prayers had been heard, and that Elizabeth in her old age and after all the years of being barren would have a son. Their son would be John the Baptist, a cousin of Jesus and a forerunner. At first Zachariah didn't believe he could be a father or Elizabeth a mother at this stage of their life, even if they were righteous, so he was struck dumb until John's naming.
It was the angel Gabriel who visted John's future father, Zachariah

The day is known as the Annunciation. It is a Christian feast day that commemorates the angel Gabriel's visit to the Virgin Mary to announce that she would conceive and give birth to Jesus, the Son of God.
The appearance of the Angel Gabriel to Mary to tell her she had been chosen to be the mother of God is called the Annunciation.
He received a message from an archangel named Gabriel, and after Gabriel told him to tell everyone about Islam, he took it upon himself to be the first one to spread it and believe it since an angel told him about the religion.
In the Bible, a messenger often refers to angels who were sent by God to deliver important messages or instructions to humans. These messengers acted as intermediaries between God and humans, relaying divine revelations and carrying out God's will. One prominent example is the angel Gabriel who delivered the message to Mary about Jesus' conception.
Gabriel was the angel who came to Mary, mother of Jesus, and Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, to tell them that their sons were to be born and the significance of each birth. (See Luke 1 11-38.) Gabriel also appeared to Daniel in the Old Testament. Gabriel told Daniel the meaning of the vision relating to the last days of this world. (See Daniel 8 & 9.)
Yes!Angel Gabriel is the 'Chief' of the Angels - why would God come down to earth to speak to humans - God sends humans as Prophet to speak to humans,But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for no one may see me (i.e. the One and Only True God) and live." [Exodus 33:20]"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.' [Luke 16:29].
Gabriel visited Mary to tell her that she had been chosen to bear Jesus (Luke 1:26-38). The angel who announced the birth of Christ to the shepherds is not named (Luke2:8-15). Matthew's gospel doesn't name any of the angels involved in events surrounding Jesus' birth. Mark and John do not record these angelic visits.
