They started in Chicago, not very well known (except in the area). It started with Pete Wentz and Joe Trohman. They held auditions to form their band. Patrick Stump intended to audition as drummer, but they were impressed by his vocal skills, so they made him lead singer. For their first concert, their band had no name. At the end of the concert, they had the audience shout out name ideas. One of them proposed "fallout boy", the sidekick to Radioactive Man in The Simpsons. They had played the closing theme song to The Simpsons during their concert. That's how Fall Out Boy got started.
