Most would say racism, which is wrong. You see the confederates supported slavery mainly because I believe they needed it. They're economy depended on it, and then north wouldn't want t them to industrialize. So they left and formed their own nation. A big thing was also state right's, you know the pre-bush world or maybe before the tyrant Lincoln took office.
