The invention of the printing press indirectly led to the Protestant Reformation (the middle class could now read The Bible and interpret it themselves, thus making them question the church) The invention also inspired the spread of literacy around Europe and thus led to the development of new universities for the middle class. (since books were available to more people, many more became literate and eductated, this in turn inspired the formation of new universities for the middle class)

Before the printing press everything had to be hand copied, so things written down were hard to come by. After the printing press everything was at a much easier reach. So as oppose to having maybe 3 copies of a book, because of the printing press 30+ copies were then available, therefore the spread of books and knowledge.
