The Battle of Saipan was fought on Saipan, an island in the chain of islands known as the Mariana Islands. The "Marianas Turkey Shoot" was the Air Battle, and a huge turning point in the Pacific Theater. US Navy Sea planes fought Japanese Imperial Land based planes during this battle over Saipan and the surrounding islands, and the Japanese lost most of their remaining experienced pilots as the US inflicted heavy casualities without many losses of their own pilots and planes.

Sorry I neglected to say what I know about the Japanese force on Saipan. i must be suffering from a kind of victory disease of my own. I'm not sure about the unit designations but the Japanese force consisted of about 32,000 men and a small tank unit.

He was a Mexican American who served as a Japanese linguist in the 2nd Marines and was recommended for the Medal of Honor, but was given the Silver Star for his accomplishment.
