Their Birthday suits
Kings in medieval times wore coats with spots on the sides and the sides colour was white. The inside of the coat was red or any other colour that is light or bright. They had a crown on top of their heads because that represents that they are the rulers. Sometimes they had gems, diamonds, and jewels because they are so rich. They had boots and slippers to wear on their feet
During the earliest part of the Middle Ages, in those areas of Western Europe that had been in the Roman Empire, most people, regardless of rank wore a woolen tunic of the Roman style, but the nobility would have better materials and fur lined clothing. These styles did not change much during the first centuries of the Middle Ages.
Germanic people tended to wear breeches and shirts. Charlemagne wore the costume of the common Frankish people, which was a linen shirt with a tunic, and linen breeches covered by hose fastened with bands. He usually refused to wear clothes of the Roman style, but did so when visiting popes in Rome.
In the later middle ages, Kings (and Queens) wore clothing that was far superior clothing to that of the average person. They would not have worn anything the peasant classes wore. You could say, Kings and Queens were real clothes horses - they had large wardrobes as a rule to match their status.
Here is an description of Louis IX of France (1214-1260)
"he went into his garden dressed in a camel's-hair coat, a surcoat of linsey-woolsey without sleeves, a black silk cloak without a hood, and a hat trimmed with peacocks' feathers. At other times he was dressed in a coat of blue silk, a surcoat and mantle of scarlet satin, and a cotton cap."
Royalty would have employed the best tailors in the kingdom to ensure they were always dressed appropriately. Many of their clothes were heavily embroidered, and luxurious. Precious gems would have been sewn into the clothing as well - pearls, silver and gold too. Think of it as 'blinking' their clothes. The furs would have been the best ermine, their hats trimmed with finest feather available.
Another description of King Louis gives us a great picture of how fine their dress would have been:
At the [crowning] of Louis IX., in 1226, .... Louis IX. with his hair short, and wearing a red velvet cap, a tunic, and over this a cloak open at the chest, having long sleeves, which are slit up for the arms to go through; this cloak, or surcoat, is trimmed with ermine in front, and has the appearance of what we should now call a fur shawl. The young King has long hose, and shoes similar in shape to high slippers.
You've seen pictures of men in hose (we think they look like they are wearing pantyhose, but they aren't), and pointy shoes? During the 1200's this was the height of fashion for nobility.
Like our time, fashion changed with each generation. Royalty set the standard that all nobility wanted to copy. See the attached link to a page that traces the changes in what a King would wear throughout the Medieval period.
Styles did change a little during the middle ages. The basics were a shift or short robe, a cloak or coat, breeches or hose to keep the legs warm. Some type of belt. They may have worn a tabbard or a top layer like a long vest over the primary robe or shift. Often family crests and symbols were embroidered on this. Sandals or shoes made of leather, or boots. They had garters of sorts to keep up there hose.
TIGHTS of course.......... Actually they wore outfits that consisted of a tunic robes and PANTS! Tights weren't worn until the 1500s.
they wore clean clothes and they were thick as to keep them warm and they wore mostly red as red represented victory and pride.

The Latin Queens wear the same colors as the Latin Kings, which is black & gold.
Kings and Queens wear crowns because the crown is usually made out of expensive jewels that no person could get, so it would show that they are part of the royal family. Kings and Queens crown are not like fake ones that little kids have.
