When Abraham Lincoln was young, the US used so-called "large cents". These coins were made of pure copper and were about the size of a modern half dollar. They had a picture of Miss Liberty on the front. Most had the words ONE CENT in a wreath on the back.
In 1856 the US started to issue "small cents" that were the same diameter as modern cents but a bit thicker. These coins were struck in copper-nickel. From 1856 to 1858 the coins had a soaring eagle on the front. In 1859 the eagle was replaced with an image of Miss Liberty wearing a Native American headdress. These were the first "Indian Head" cents.
The first design was soon modified slightly and the composition was changed to bronze. That design remained in use until 1909 when the first Lincoln cents were introduced.
