Those that were successful in their search for gold would have been rich and lived happily ever after. Many of the unsuccessful people would have had to go back to their old lives. Actually, many people could not even go back to their old lives as heaps got sick and died from the bad sanitation and living arrangements.
The goldrush in Australia lasted from 1851 right through to the 1870s, with another late rush in the Northern Territory in the 1930s. After the main rush to find gold finished, most of the diggers returned to their homes, their families, their trades, their farms, etc which they had left behind when they went to the diggings. Many moved to the larger cities. Some stayed in the towns and built up their own businesses.
Others may have gone on to other countries where there had been recent gold strikes. New Zealand, for example, had a goldrush partway through the Australian goldrushes.
