The South had slaves. Remember Lincoln did not free the slaves until over 2 years after the war started. But I don't think this was much of an advantage to them. The North still had a lot more people to draft into the military and to replace the wounded or dead soldiers.

The South had a special problem the North did not have -- a naval blockade. Northern ships were surrounding the Southern ports and cutting them off from food, supplies, weapons, and other things they needed that they wanted to buy from Europe.
