The success of scouting started with the city kids. The youths who lived in the country knew what berries and fruits could be eaten as that was a part of their life, harvesting thing to help fill the pantry. A country boy knew how to clean fish and game as well as how to use an ax in chopping firewood. Country kids also milked cows, tended to chickens and worked a garden. As scouting moved into the country the youths who lived there learned about the stars, map reading, semaphore flags, and things that were not a standard part of their lives. But the great thing was when the city youths and the country youths got together. The scout leaders could stand and observe as the youths took up the teaching of skills they had already learned and mastered. There are many stories of former scouts using their learned skills to survive in both WW I and WWII.
