Why did the supreme court ruled against dred Scott?

The Supreme Court ruled against Dred Scott in 1857 in the case of Dred Scott v. The decision also invalidated the Missouri Compromise of 1820, stating that Congress did not have the power to prohibit slavery in the territories.
