This short story by Alphonse Daudet is written about the Franco-Prussian War, back in 1870; through the eyes of a young child, it looks at one of the results of that war-- Prussia had won, and now it would be forbidden to speak French. There are many lessons in the story, but one important lesson is that we often take things for granted and don't realize their importance until they are gone. The last lesson refers to the last time the boy will be taught in French, before the Prussians insist upon their language, the language of the victors in the war.

The story also touches on the impact of political decisions on individuals and the value of education in fostering connections to one's heritage.
