Fremont was an interesting man. He was with Lewis and Clark and later was asked by the President to come to CA to help gage how easy it would be to take it from Mexico. The Mexican officials were told that Fremont was in CA to map it, but he was reporting troop numbers and making contacts with people like Sutter. When the time came Fremont and his men took the Mexican governor hostage, put him in Sutter's Fort, and declared the "Bear Flag" Republic. They took over the government with the approval of the President. The Gold Rush was also going on and the population of Americans in CA grew so fast that it was impossible for the Mexican government to overcome the combination of factors in the loss of CA. CA became a state on Sept. 9, 1850.
As a team (although Lewis was the primary agent), Lewis and Clark influenced no less significant a person than the President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, in their attempt to help the United States grow both territorially and economically. With their wilderness and leadership experience as legitimizing factors, Lewis and Clark were instrumental in decisions made by the American government to look carefully westwards for opportunities to expand as a nation.

There are many plants found on the Westward Expansion, such as wild flowers. I am not 100% sure of names... But you can search on the internet: What were some names of the plants found in the Westward Expansion? If anybody knows that answer to this question, please edit this answer and help others learn the answer. Thank you!
