Standing in front of the truck you would turn the pump to the drivers side to retard the timing. your would turn it to the left
The timing is adjusted by the three bolts that holds the injection pump. The holes in the pump are slotted.
loosen the three bolts that hold the injector pump to the timing cover or were you pour the oil in these bolt can be hard to reach put a thin 9/16 wrench will do it turn the pump to the passenger side to advance the timing and driver to retard it mark the pump where its at before you start to move it and make small adjustments 0.30 of a inch can be as much as 2 degrees While looking at the engine, it is turning clockwise, therefore, the injection pump is turning counter-clockwise. To advance the timing, you have to turn the pump to the drivers side and to retard the timing, turn it to the passenger side.
Help...can anyone point me in the direction of a diagram or instructions? online?
A 1989 Dakota has throttle body fuel injection.
There typically isn't any timing marks at the distributor. It is possible to slightly advance or retard the ignition (spark) timing by rotating the distrubitor but as far as timing marks go, the only that you will find will be right above the camshaft sprocket and the harmonic balancer (crankshaft pully). possible one more for the oil pump or countershaft.
Yes, throttle body injection.
