If an individual with no knowledge of the US Civil War were to be given all the numerous statistics that described the capabilities of the North and South, then asked if the South should begin a war with the North the answer would be clear. Easily the observer would advise the South to stay out of a war with the North. Yet the South proceeded as if their cause would succeed. The South had many disadvantages when the war began that include the following:
A. Lack of a central government; B. No organized military; C. No navy; D. A five to two ratio in favor of the North regarding available troops; E. Lack of a manufacturing base; and F. A vast amount of territory to defend.
There were more disadvantages but certainly the ones outlined display the reasons why a war against the North would be ill advised.

There were a multitude of disadvantages that the South had in the US Civil War. The states that seceded had to create a central government from scratch. The South had no navy and had to either build it themselves or have warships built for them in England. Another major disadvantage was the fact that the North had an huge population compared to the South. Thus, the North could build armies from its vast population.
