The "brown stuff" should not be a disease, it's called algae. To get rid of this, move your aquarium away from sunlight and make sure those plants are safe for aquarium use. If you can't move the aquarium away from sunlight, use some medications for your fish tank at your local fish store.

In the eastern part of the country, Late blight has been spread by the big box stores like Walmart. This disease causes moldy spots on the stems and then kills the leaves, eventually turning the plant brown and dry. The tomatoes, however are safe to eat. Its best to not compost the dead plants, but instead to burn them to keep the disease from spreading and staying in the soil.
