That they don't have a spirit, and are fine to eat.

The Bible says that God created (the Hebrew word was bara which means something created from nothing; a divine act which can only be done by God) man in his own image, but also says that he "created (the Hebrew word was asah, which means something created from something which already exists, which could be done by either God or man) man from the dust of the earth."

It also says that he created the animals (asah). I believe that when God created man in his image he was referring to our spirit. The Bible also says that God is not light, love, not man. It also says "Am I only a God nearby,' declares the LORD, 'and not a God far away?'" which means that we aren't physically in the image of God.

There are many other things in the Bible that point toward them not having a spirit, and therefore not having anything such as human thoughts and emotions (love, hate, guilt... We naturally like art, many like to worship God, and you simply don't see those in animals).

God also says (in the Bible, in reference to animals) "Do not call what i have made clean unclean." Meaning that it's okay to eat them, later saying that it is what goes into your heart that makes you spiritually unclean.

Hope this answers your q! :)

I believe that mankind is responsible for the welfare and the well being of all animals and that God has given us dominion over them, to care for them, to make sure they are treated humanely, to assure that they have food and shelter, and to make some of them a part of our family. They should always be treated with love and compassion and ensure they see a vet on a regular basis.

Because God made them and gave us the stewardship of them and the earth. Proverbs 12:10 says, A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
