Here are a few tips for memorizing Quran (or anything else, for that matter).

What?

  • The Quran

With whom?
  • It is best to memorize with someone who can check your recitation. Go to the local mosque; there may be a Quran class for this purpose.
  • You can memorize with a group, or you can memorize alone. Different people use different methods.
  • If you like to memorize alone, or there is no one available to check your recitation, or you're just practising/reviewing, use audio to help you memorize. One can buy tapes or find recitations online.

Where?
  • Quiet, simple room. Remove all distractions, such as bright posters and loud noises.
  • At eye level. Try not to dip your head while during memorization.

When?
  • At dawn (after Fajr prayer), before breakfast or other tasks
  • Consistently. Don't put large gaps between memorizing one thing and another. Memorize daily.
How?
  • With a positive attitude. It can make all the difference.
  • Eat healthy. Avoid fatty foods and soda. Also, snack on almonds. They are good for improving one's memory.
  • Memorize something new.
  • Don't jump around. Move steadily in one direction.
  • Start small. The surahs (chapters) in the back of the Quran are the shortest.
  • Listen before you leap. Listen to a recitation before you study the surah yourself.
  • Repeat. Over and over and over...
  • Memorize translation. Arabic isn't the first language for most Muslims, and it can be tricky to learn. Memorizing the translation will help you make connections with why one word leads to the next, and why one aya (verse) leads to the one after.
  • Review. Every day, go over what you memorized the past ten days. This helps to solidify the material in your mind.
  • Practice! Use what you memorize, especially in prayer.

Why?
  • With every letter recited, you earn 10 hasana (good deeds).
  • Learn about Islam.
  • Strengthen your work ethic. Memorizing the Quran is not easy. It takes time, effort, perseverance, and patience. These values will aid you in everything you do.
  • Learn another language.
  • Much, much more!

How do Muslims respect the Qur'an?

Well, to begin with, the first thing a new born baby hears in it's life is part of the Qur'an. During the birth, a family member will recite the selected part over and over again. Muslim children have to memorise certain parts of the Qur'an as it is recited 5 times a day, some Muslims even learn Arabic! Someone who has memorised the whole Qur'an is known as a Hafiz Most Qur'ans are hand written entirely in caligraphy and decorated with colourful mosaic/geometric designs The Qur'an is never set on the floor. When not in use, it is wrapped in silk and place on top of the highest peice of funiature in the room, above all other books so as to be closer to Allah Before the Qur'an is read, the reader must wash him/herself on the hands, feet face, mouth and hair If the Qur'an has been written on a blackboard or slate it must be cleaned off with water once it is done with. Avoid putting the water where there are unclean substances or where people walkThe Qu'ran is the Islamic holy book, just as the Bible is to Christians. The Bible is the guideline to Christianity as the Qu'ran is to Muslims. That is why it is respected by all Muslims around the world. Interesting to note- The Qu'ran is also very similar to the Old Testament in the Bible. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are similar in many ways. Research it.
