The three cities of Boston, Philadelphia & New York City were all important cities in the original 13 British Colonies. These cities were also important places just prior to, during & after the American Revolution.
In many ways the city of Boston and the colony of Massachusetts were the leaders in the Revolution. In Philadelphia the 1776 Declaration of Independence was signed. New York City was home to the battle of Bunker Hill & was held by the British for most of the Revolutionary War.
They also have a few other items of commonality:
1. They are large cities, both in the past & to the current day;
2. All three cities are seaports;
3. All three cities are extremely multi -ethnic; and
4. All three have international airports.

Philadelphia was a Quaker city. It was more tolerant than Puritan Boston, however, New York City was irreligious from the start. There were fewer obstacles against Jews and Catholics.
New York City has the most but Boston Mass. and Philadelphia Pa. also has a large population.
New York City, Boston and Philadelphia are all easy drives from Providence.
The Hudson River in New York and the Delaware River in Philadelphia both had ports so trader could sell there goods to England or other places.
