That would depend on the medium they are working in. Acrylics and oils are usually mixed on a palette using a palette knife. In some cases they are applied to the canvas or ground and blended there. Watercolours are mixed in pans before application or layered one over another on the painting. Pastels and charcoal are mixed with your hands or a blending stump.
