Both. Sometimes loan apps are filtered out based on score alone, but a lender will look at the actual credit report for any borrower under consideration.

How do you get your credit score?

Here's a couple ways... By law, each of the three major credit reporting agencies have to give you one free credit report (in addition to other opportunities you have to look at your report when you are denied credit based on reports for any of the three) The three agencies are Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. The place to get the free credit reports is listed in the related links below. These reports do NOT include your credit score but, for a nominal fee you can have your score included. I think the last time I got my score in this manner the fee was six dollars. There are other ways to track your credit score. Some banks such has Washington Mutual offer credit cards which include availability to your TransUnioin credit score anytime as an extra perk of the card. Also, the higher end Microsoft Money software packages include a year of free credit score monitoring, I think there's was from Experian and you could get that score anytime you wanted.

How does pulling credit reports affect credit score?

If you are pulling it on yourself, it doesn't affect it in any way. If you apply for multiple loans and each lender pulls a credit report, it will have a negative effect on your score because it may look like you are desperate for credit.

Do the three major credit bureaus work together to determine your credit score?

No; they are three completely separate companies. The 3 credit bureaus that currently exist in the U.S. are 3 different competing companies offering various features but pretty much the same information regarding credit reports and scores. When lenders look at your credit report and score, they can look at 1, 2, or all 3 reports and scores. When looking up your credit report and score, your report should be identical across all 3 bureaus, but your score can very by as much as 20 points between bureaus.

Why do people get free credit score reports to take down there credit?

People often get credit scores before making large purchases to make sure their credit is good enough to get the best loan rates. If their credit score is lower than they expected, they are able to look through the information and find possible mistakes.
