Goldfish are mainly herbivores and so they love to eat aquatic plants like anacharis and duckweed, green algae, vegetables like cucumber, romaine lettuce , green peas, beet tops, sweet potatoes, carrots, fruits like bananas and melons. Greens help with a goldfishes digestion and green peas are commonly advised as a treatment for goldfish constipation. Boiled carrot contain carotene which help keep a goldfish orange.
They also eat animals that are living, frozen or freeze dried. These can include shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, mosquito larva, squid, daphnia, bloodworms and all types of other worms. Squid and other marine animals make good food for small goldfish and fry (baby goldfish).
Pond goldfish get pellets and sticks because they float longer and don't break apart easy which give the goldfish more time to find them. There are also different types of food depending on the season. When water temperatures get colder, goldfish eat less and require different food types.

∙ 6y agoThey were developed from the common Asian carp and their natural evolution made them "Omnivorous". They will eat most insect larvae and bits of plant life too. Most pet shops carry several different makes of "Goldfish Food". It is always good for the fish if you supplement these commercial foods with a bit of live food such as earthworms at least once a week.
