reversed itself in the past

The alternating magnetic orientation is caused by polar shifts or reversal, (not end of the world kinda stuff). When the rock is new and molten the grains are free to align themselves with the prevailing magnetic field, as the rock cools, the grains are frozen in time. As the sea floor expands outward (in the Atlantic), it is regularly striped with rock oriented in different directions. This indicates that the magnetic poles have reversed many times throughout the Earth's history.

The alternating bands on the ocean floors of the spreading centers come from pole reversals that happen to the earth every 1400 or so years. Scientists are still not entirely sure what causes these magnetic field reversals, but North on a compass becomes South, and South on a compass becomes North.

they indicate that the seafloor is spreading or receding due to reversed and normal polarities.

What is the significance of the patterns of offsets along mid-ocean ridges?

the matching patterns on either side of the mid-ocean ridge could be explained by new ocean crust forming at the ridge and spreading away from it as ocean crust forms it obtains the polarity of the earth's magnetic field at that time over time the strength of the earths magnetic field changes when new ocean crust forms at the center of the spreading it obtains a new kind of magnetic polarity over time a series of magnetic ''stripes'' are formed

True or false magnetic stripes on the ocean floor are places where oceanic crust sinks back to the mantle?

F

Do magnetic stripes on the ocean floor oceanic crust sink back into the mantle?

Eventually the oceanic crust, along with the magnetically aligned minerals contained within, will be subducted into the mantle.

Is magnetic stripes on the ocean floor the places where oceanic crust sinks back to the mantle?

What happens in earth interior to produce earths magnetic field describe the layer where the magnetic field is produced?

What escapes the crust is what we observe as the earths magnetic field. The outer core is a rotating mass of fluid metal that induces an electrical current which in turn generates the magnetosphere.

Earths crust is part of the?
