Why do girls wear pantyhose?

Because pantyhose make your legs look and feel so awesomely sexy and beautiful. Pantyhose come in all varieties of colors and styles (I prefer the basic control tops but every now and then I indulge in sheer to waist pantyhose as well as stockings and thigh-highs). Guys love seeing their girlfriends or wives wearing pantyhose as well.

Let's say you want to wear a mini skirt but you don't want stuff to show...the leggings are there and it won't show. Also, they comfy. And they are stylish.

This can be for a number of reasons. Normally it's to keep the legs warm, but also because some girls are self-conscious about their legs and want to cover them up. Some like the look of it, and sometimes it can be to adopt a certain appearance- for example, to look professional.

Boys wore tights because tights were originally worn by men starting in the 13th century. They were referred to as hose. Adult men wore hose in their everyday wardrobe. Boys dressed similar to men, thus they also wore hose. Hose for men went from hose with longer tunics to shorter tunics to hose as pants during the Renaissance. Then it was hose with tight breeches In the 17th century.

Hose for men in its various forms lasted up till the 1800s, At this time fashion shifted away from fitted hose for men to trousers. Boys styles followed this trend.

However boys in parts of Europe and Japan often wore tights under shorts until the mid 20th century. They were worn for warmth. Sometimes they were used as part of formal dress for boys. When boys reached their teens they generally switched over to wearing pants like older men.

Tights were still seen on men and boys in Hollywood period pieces during the first half of the 20th century. That began to change when women’s dresses grew shorter over time. Women were beginning to show more of their legs. It became necessary for them to cover them up to remain decent. This is when tights began to be worn exclusively by women and girls. Tights were used to keep women modest while wearing shorter dresses and skirts. By the time we get to the 1960s tights had become associated with women and girls. Pantyhose, a more sheer garment, was also invented for women to wear with their dresses and skirts. The word hose, added to panty caused the idea of hose to be strongly associated with women as well.

Period pieces of the last half of the 20th and early 21st century began to dress male characters without tights to reflect this new new social norm, as it was now women and girls who wore tights. It was considered inappropriate for men to wear tights in almost all its form. Wearing tights was seen as dressing feminine.

This trend continues today as tights have continued to evolve into what we now refer to as leggings or yoga pants, Women and girls of the late 20th and early 21st centuries have been wearing them in place of footed tights for a few decades now. Leggings have also evolved into a form of acceptable bottoms. They can be worn in place of pants or a dress. This is similar to the Renaissance when men and boys wore hose as pants.

In current times however, the social norm is still for women and girls to wear tights as fashion. This includes leggings. The fashion is usually worn by women and girls only, except when men wear tights for exercise, dance, or costumes.

This social norm is an evolution of when tights made their way from mens legs to women’s legs. This is also why boys wore tights, but no longer wear them today.

For all intents and purposes, women‘s fashion is following the same course men’s fashion did. Women and girls are currently in the tights as pants period. While they are in this fashion cycle its likely tights will be worn predominately by women and girls for generations to come.
