The halal food, that is allowed, for Muslim to eat and what is forbidden for him to eat is based, mainly, on the following two Quran sayings (Meaning English translation):

But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin by eating what is forbidden above, then surely Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful"
Quran, Chapter 5, verse 5: " Made lawful to you this day At-Tayyibat (all kinds of lawful foods, which Allah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables and fruits). The food (slaughtered cattle, eatable animals) of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) is lawful to you and yours is lawful to them..."
From the above, it is clear that what is forbidden to eat, except in cases of severe hunger, are mainly dead animals, pork, blood, and what is not slaughtered under name of God.
Alcohol and other intoxicants are also forbidden in Islam.
