Hawaiians, like some other cultures, address elders with Auntie or Uncle before the person's name. I.E. Auntie Momi or Uncle Sam. It is a sign of respect and aloha which is practiced throughout the islands. You don't have to be Hawaiian and you don't have to be related. Neighbors, family friends, and long time acquaintances like bankers, teachers, grocery store personnel, doctors' office, etc. It's a beautiful way to show respect to elders (kupuna). Even someone else' aunty can be your aunty!!
