For instance the first Oxford English Dictionary (includes a linguistic history of words). James Murray let the effort and one of the major contributors was W.C. Minor. Check out the book, The Professor and the Madman, by Simon Winchester. An earlier dictionary was written by Sam Johnson in the 1700s. Noah Webster was an American lexicographers.
