Many pathogens enter the body through the mouth and nose. The linings of the mouth, throat and nose produce mucus which can trap bacteria. This mucus is periodically swallowed and the acid in the stomach kills most of the bacteria. So that's how we get colds and why pathogens make us feel icky and ill.

Disease. The word means literally that in Greek. The prefix "patho-" means disease as in the word pathology (the study of disease). The suffix "-gen" means create/begin/generate.

The word pathogen is most often used to describe the agent that causes an infectious disease (the same as "germ"), but can be used to indicate the cause of any type of disease.
