Portugal is known for its seafood. Fish is generally served grilled, boiled, fried or steamed. Octopus, squid, cuttlefish, crabs, shrimp and lobster are popular but they also serve barnacles, goose barnacles, hake, and lamprey. Some enjoy canned sardines and tuna. Chicken, pork, and beef dishes are available.
Portuguese people follow a Mediterranean diet. The base of most dishes use Refugado that is a base in cooking made with olive oil, onions, garlic and tomatoes. Olive oil is much appreciated and much used in Portuguese cooking. Portugal is also the 3rd country that most consume fish/seafood per capita in the world. The seafare tradition of this country make fish a very much appreciated dish. Vegetables are also very much part of the Portuguese diet.
Meat is of course very popular as well and there is a huge variety of tasty dishes. Some of the most traditional include Rojões, Carne de Porco à Alentejana, Chanfana, Feijoada and Cozido à Portuguesa.
Soup is probably the one thing that is never missed in a Portuguese table. Its even said that Numa casa com sopa nunca se passa fome meaning A home with soup never goes hungry.Portuguese people love soup and you will find a huge variety of this everywhere. Usually meals start with appetizers then a soup course then the main dish and finally dessert. The main dish is usually if not always served with a lettuce, onion and tomato salad.
In Summer time you will find in every corner small cafes and restaurants everywhere in the country that serve Caracóiswhich is Snails. Its a very appreciated delicacy usually eaten as a snack (between lunch and dinner) with friends always with a very cold beer in an traditional tavern or in an esplanade.
In fall/winter the streets of many Portuguese cities specially Lisbon is full of the smell of roasted chestnuts that comes from little cars (much similar to the small street Hot Dogs sellers cars) where sellers roast and sell chestnuts.
