Same as everywhere in the civilized world, romanians are intensive users of cell phones and internet. At the end of 2007, there were 22.9 million cell phone numbers in use (on a total population of about 22 million people), rate of penetration of 106% (which is greater than other countries in the EU as Germany).
There are 4 major cell phone companies in Romania:
Vodafone Romania (with almost 9 million numbers in use), Orange Romania (9.8 million), Cosmote (4.2 million) and Zapp (around 500.000).
While Vodafone and Orange have existed on the romanian market since the end of the 1990's (under different names), Cosmote was the last to enter but soon got the 3rd place.
Unlike other European countries, romanians seem to prefer subscriptions rather than rechargeable cards (these are mostly popular with Cosmote because of their numerous offers beside subscription plans).
Fixed phones are not as popular as cell phones, their number being half of that of cell phone numbers in use. Romtelecom (formerly owned by the state) is still the largest and most important fixed phone company, followed by other cell and/or internet providers that have fixed phone divisions.
Romanians also use the internet to communicate. Unlike other European countries where MSN/Windows Live Messenger is the most used, romanians prefer Yahoo! Messenger for real time chat, Yahoo and Gmail for e-mail service and Skype for voice. Statistics based on inquiries in high schools in Bucharest showed that 4/5 teenagers have a Yahoo account.
