Roman Catholic answerA priest celebrating Mass usually has on a cassock, over this he puts on a amice (around his neck). Then he puts on the alb (the web site below has pictures) which is a floor length wide robe which may have lace in the sleeves and near the hem, the alb is secured with a cincture (a white rope that goes around his waist and hangs down each side with a fringe). He then hangs a stole around his neck. In the old Mass he hangs a small stole, called a maniple from his left forearm. Over all of this goes the chasuble which, like the stole and the maniple is the color of the feast he is celebrating. He may (in an old Mass, he must) wear a biretta on his head.

The altar boy usually wears a black cassock (floor length robe with buttons down the front) with a white surplice over it, although occasionally you will see them in white albs with cinctures.

During Mass do Catholics go up to the Altar?

During the Mass, the only people who should approach and then enter the Sanctuary, in which the Altar is located, are priests, acolytes, and deacons (basically people who are assisting at the Mass). However, Catholics when receiving communion do approach the Altar area but do not enter into it as the priest stands in front of the Sanctuary to distribute communion.
