Take from a 7th grade boy. If you are dating then just ask him. If you like him and don't know if he likes you back, don't just go up and ask him out. They will panic and maybe say something they normaly wouldn't. Start off slow and gradually work your way up. Sit next to him at lunch or start a conversation with him. Once you're friends it might be easier to impress him. If you can't start a conversation with out long pauses or studdering, do something that you're good at and make sure he sees it. He might come and talk to you about it. If he does, don't freak. Just be yourself. When you think you're ready to ask him out, just walk up calmly and say something to him. If you want to just hang out more, invite him to a birthday party or something. Make sure to invite some of his other friends too, otherwise he will feel uncomfortable. Whatever you do, DO NOT STARE AT HIM IN CLASS. It has happened to me and it creeped me out. Hopefully this helps and I wish you luck.
