Schwann cells have at least two functions. They have much fat in them and they act as an insulator. Much like the covering on the cords you have in your home. It prevents short circuits. (Think what would happen to you if the cord you are plugging had no covering). The other function is the space between the cells on the axon (cord). This allows the impulse to jump from space to space and the impulse is more rapid with schwann cells.
