Roman Catholic AnswerThe papacy was founded by Our Blessed Lord when He appointed St. Peter as the first Vicar of His Church in St. Matthew's Gospel 16:17-19. We believe that the Holy Father can not err when he is teaching on the matter of faith and morals as head of the Church and addressing the entire Church. That is called papal infallibility and it is a very limited doctrine, he cannot come up with something that the Church has never believed in, he is not personally sinless, and his opinions are just as fallible as any other man, taking into account that he is a Bishop and an elder in the Church and appointed by God as Pope. Therefore, we usually give more weight to his opinion than someone else.
